Twenty-Fingered Farmers Market

K: Farmers’ Market Week 20

30 September 2012

Saturday morning at the farmers’ market was lovely – great weather, and excellent looking fall produce.  We hit a few really cold days at the beginning of the week, but now we’re back to highs in the 70s, and it’s wonderful.

Our haul was pretty small this week, so this is just going to be a list (sorry – maybe I’ll update with a picture if I remember to take one).

  • A cranberry scone and an almond cinnamon bun for breakfast.  (Extra points if you guess who ate which!)
  • 2 butternut squash (for dinner Tuesday night – we’re making enchiladas!)
  • 1 eggplant (no plans for this guy yet, but it’ll make an appearance on Thursday)
  • 1 green pepper and 1 onion (nothing too special here)

Hope you’re all having a delicious, cooking-filled week!

K: Farmers’ Market, Week 19

23 September 2012

Ahh, the bounty of fall!  I technically didn’t go to the market this week (too much to do at work), but D brought home plenty of beautiful produce for us to enjoy!  I’m particularly excited about the pumpkin, and am hoping for a better version of last week’s disastrous squash pie.

I have a pretty good idea of what we’ll do with the onions, peppers, and tomatoes, but does anyone have any favorite beet/radish recipes that we simply must try?  We always love new recipe suggestions!

K: Farmers’ Market, Week 18

19 September 2012

Sorry for putting this up so late this week!  We’ve had a number of other delicious culinary ventures taking up our time, but we did make it to the market on Saturday!  The pumpkins were out in force, but we stuck to smaller goodies:

We got two types of corn (white, and yellow, and for a discount too!), plus tomatoes and tomatillos.  The cantaloupe smelled delicious but… we didn’t eat it fast enough.  =[  Maybe next week.

Hope you’re having a week of delicious food!

K: Farmers Market

9 September 2012

Yesterday was a beautiful day at the Farmers’ Market!  It was lovely and cool, and full of some of the early fall produce.

This week features some new produce for us:

Chinese squash (which I’ve never heard of before, but it looked cool, so I bought it!), a heart of gold squash (which is like an acorn squash, only sweeter), and fingerling potatoes.

In addition to those, we got some of the regulars: kale, onions, green peppers, and assorted hot peppers.  Yum!

K: Farmers’ Market Week 14

21 August 2012

Last weekend at the farmers’ market was gorgeous – beautiful weather, tasty food, and generally a good time.  This week, we bought a few non-produce items, which were/are delicious to munch on.

We purchased our regular onions, and some green beans, but also branched out into butternut squash (the first for the season!), cinnamon chip bread (delicious), and apricot butter (not pictured here – I forgot that it was in the fridge – but also very yummy!).  D was talking about making a butternut squash pie, so we’ll see what winds up happening to the squash.

K: Farmers’ Market Week 13

12 August 2012

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous at the market.  The weather was perfect, so the aisles were packed with people itching to get fresh produce!

This week, we bought peppers.  Lots and lots of peppers.  We’re hoping to do a stuffed peppers dish later this week, and that’ll get filled out with the  onions and some leftover produce from last week.  To round out the pickings, we got a watermelon (which is delicious!) and a cucumber for salads (yum!).

K: Farmers’ Market, Week 13

5 August 2012

Another beautiful day at the market (or so I was told – D went out to conquer the stands on his own Saturday morning).  The bright side of this was that when I got home, there were beautiful fruits and vegetables in the kitchen!

Mmmmmm, don’t those look delicious?  We got about a pound of tomatoes, a yellow zucchini, an eggplant, five peppers, an onion, and a good number of white nectarines.  Yum!  D also got some award-winning soft cheese at the market, and our neighbors dropped off some home-grown tomatoes earlier today for us to enjoy.  Despite the low rainfall this year, it really is awesome getting to enjoy so much fresh produce!

We’ve already used almost half of our veggies, but that post will come later this month.  In the meantime, though, I’m excited to start on the nectarines.  =]

D: Farmer’s Market, Week 12!

28 July 2012

K’s out of town this week, so I guess it’s up to me to write the farmer’s market post. Here’s what we got:

From left to right: a sack of green beans (yum!), a loaf of sourdough (double-yum!), two red peppers that were on sale because they were “small and blemished” (which they really aren’t, but I’m not one to complain), an onion (a necessary part of cooking for just about every meal I make), a cayenne pepper (also necessary for about half the meals I make), and a giant star melon. The guy at the stall didn’t have a sample of it, but he assured me that it was incredibly sweet and that I wouldn’t regret buying one. So here’s to hopin’ he’s right.

I don’t have any specific plans for any of this stuff yet (except the bread, which I plan to devour), but I’m sure I’ll come up with something!

K: Farmers’ Market Week 11

21 July 2012

D was working at the market this week, so I had a bit of time early in the day to walk around and pick out the best produce.  I’m pretty excited with our haul.  But before I get into that, I wanted to share the bounty of what’s available right now for tomatoes:

Heirloom tomatoes!  And mix and match!  (None of the other stands had quite the same variety.)  From left to right, chocolate, rose, violet jasper, green zebra, black pineapple, black from Tula, gold metal, and prudence purple.  I always love the names people come up with, too.  =]

K: Farmers’ Market, Week 10

16 July 2012

Saturday was a beautiful day at the farmers’ market.  Peaches are in season in a major way – there were at least four different stands that were almost exclusively selling peaches.  It gave the entire market a really delicious smell.  =]

We’re still working through some of last week’s goodies (I didn’t do a good job of cooking while D was out of town, but I blame the vast amount of leftovers in the fridge  =] ).

This week’s haul:

Obviously, peaches were on the list.  We got primarily donut peaches, based on last week’s success, but can you spot the one that doesn’t belong?

D spotted the purple peppers, and couldn’t pass them up.

We splurged on an heirloom tomato – I forget which variety we picked up, but it’s pretty good and looks delicious.

A few of the booths sell specialtygarlic.  We went for a “moderate flavor,” but to be honest, I don’t notice that big of a difference in its flavor relative to the cost.  =\  I’m sure D will convince me to try another variety next week – maybe that will convince me.

We also got some sweet onions and eggplant to round out our haul.  I’m pretty excited for the eggplant – it looks like it’s in season right now, and I discovered last summer that I love me a good eggplant.
