K: The Wonders of Bread

D and I both love bread.  How could you not?  It’s just so delicious!

A few weeks ago, I felt like making bread from scratch.  Normally this falls into D’s turf, but he was doing other things and the bread sounded delicious.

Mmmmmm.  See?  Doesn’t that look awesome?

We used the first loaf as a side with dinner, which was yummy, but then the second loaf sat around.  And sat.  And got stale.  By the time it gets to that stage, we often wind up throwing it away.  (We’re talking really stale!)  But this time, I make a delicious, decadent, chocolate bread pudding, and it was /amazing/.  (And I normally don’t like bread pudding!)

So, the next time you find yourself with stale-ish bread and nothing to do with it, bread pudding may be a good option!

K: On Blogging and Graduate School

We’re still cooking, I promise!

That being said, D has been focusing a bit more of his time and energy on his photography hobbies, and I’ve been frantically doing research and other miscellaneous tasks with the goal of graduating some time soon.  That being said, our time to regularly update has been limited.  Plus, wordpress migrated to some new features, which killed the recipe portion of our blog.  Sigh.

But fear not!  I finally got a huge set of pictures off of the camera, so there will be new posts going up this week (and maybe even later today!).

K: Happy Thanksgiving!

As is traditional for us, we’re doing a non-traditional Thanksgiving dinner:

Papas Rellenas, Ceviche, Empanadas, and Pudding.   (Hey, we’re using ground turkey in the papas!)

 

I hope you’re all having a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that it’s a time of relaxation, fellowship, and delicious food!

K: Soup Week is Coming!

Hot Pink Mama

Every year, our friend A hosts a soup week on her blog.  It’s a lot of fun, and last year featured an awesome mix of original posts and guest posts.  (Including one of our favourite soups EVER.  Yum.)

Anyways, it’s coming, and we’re guest blogging again, and I’m just generally so pumped about it that I thought I’d share the love.  Plus, if you ever need a good place to start looking for soup recipes, this is a good place to go!

K: Flambeed Cheese

This pretty much sums up last weekend:

And yes, this is D flambeing cheese for the appetizer to a delicious garlic pita dinner.  (Thanks J for the photo!)

We also had some other yummy food encounters through the Minnesota state fair, a Chinese place, and homemade Marguerite pizza.  (Not to mention the homemade yogurt, and chocolate chip waffles… what better way to spend a weekend off?)

K: Love for Kohlrabi

We first discovered kohlrabi last summer as a part of our CSA.  It was a fun, alien-looking vegetable that we enjoyed getting to use in a variety of different ways.

This week, the New York Times has jumped in on our kohlrabi love.  I wouldn’t call it a cross between an octopus and a space capsule, but it does look like a funny green alien.  Since kohlrabi is getting back into season, you may want to consider trying out this slightly strange, but tasty, vegetable!

K: Upscale Mexican?

Yes please!

The NY Times ran an article earlier today on a pastry chef-turned upscale Mexican restaurant owner.  It sounds delicious, and like an interesting departure from the more traditional Mexican fare D and I enjoy.

Of course, the online menu does not list prices, which makes me a little bit nervous!  I suppose I’ll just have to add it to my wish list of restaurants.

K: ‘Twas the day before Christmas

And all through the house
No other creature was stirring
Not even the spouse

The ingredients were stored
In the fridge with great care
With hope they’d be used
For tomorrow’s affair

The menu was planned
Not a detail ignored
There were drinks in the fridge
Awaiting to be poured

And as the sleepy awoke
They turned on the oven
And they cooked and they cooked
They could feed near a dozen!

Soon the table did creak
From the weight of the platters
And as the food digested
There arose such a clatter

Smiles arose
The food was just right
“Merry Christmas to all!
And to all, a good night!”

K: It’s my birthday, and I’ll eat cheesecake if I want to!

“Why not cake?”, you may ask.  I admit that while I’m not the biggest cake fan, I do like a good cheesecake.  Citrus desserts are also a big favorite for me, so a key lime cheesecake seemed like the perfect blend for my birthday!

 

Yes, I did make this for my own birthday.  =]

 But that’s not all!  I also was treated to a delicious beef bourguignon (and multiple impersonations of Julia Child).

Perfect for a winter evening!  (Thanks for cooking, A!)
